CHAPTER FOURTEEN

“Maybe those footsteps lead to something big,” Moka said at lunch the next day.

We were all sore from the return to training. Lilian had been yelling at us all morning, telling us we let our muscles get too soft during the time we spent resting from being at sea. No one dared to point out that Lilian had done the same, drinking and eating with the other pirates in the main dining hall. That would earn instant outhouse duty.

Some people, unfortunately, had only gotten back the day before training was due to start again, and a few recruits were late because of the winds stalling out north of Islanda Nylar. Lilian vowed they’d have cleaning duty as soon as they got back. Fairness did not rule here in pirate school.

“Maybe,” I said, biting out of a drumstick and keeping my voice low. The dining hall was full today, and I had to keep my voice down. I eyed the room, wondering if Ilias was still mad at me for rejecting his help. The guy seemed like he was holding a grudge even more than Pecha and her two friends were. Pecha sat two tables away, and the glares had stopped, which shocked me. But Ilias? He hung with three other young men on the other side of the room, and he refused to even look in our direction anymore.

I took another bite. It wouldn’t have done any good asking him for help, anyway. What could he have done? Adding another person to our group would have raised our chances of getting caught when we broke Elga out of his cell.

And we were still waiting for the landslide from that.

“We don’t need to do a thing,” Jes argued.

Over the past couple of days, Moka and Jes had been arguing over what was the best course of action. Moka wanted to find that mysterious key. Jes didn’t. And I frankly sided with Jes, because I sensed the quest would make me have to use my deathly magic. I’d gotten off easy in that department thanks to my gloves and keeping almost all my skin covered, so unless face combat became a thing, I was safe from killing anyone else.

“But Cameron might have another plan for getting down there before we do,” Moka said.

I shrugged, trying to stay calm. “He hasn’t done it yet.”

“He can’t,” Jes said.

Lilian peeked into the dining hall as if to check on us recruits, and her glare swept across the tables as she surveyed who was here and who wasn’t. I tensed, although I knew she was checking for stragglers to mop the floors and not anyone who might have broken into the dungeons. Or was she? I hated being here more than ever, even with Pecha no longer after me and with Moka and Jes by my side.

“I just wish a certain person would have given us answers.” I dropped my drumstick.

“Maybe he’s scared to talk. First mate, and all that,” Moka whispered. Thankfully, I’d gotten quite good at picking out her voice among the rest of the chatter in the dining hall.
